Commune

Commune - poem (flowers) brokenbreadandsmallfish.com
We had one of those moments
and yet
how much was still left
unsaid
unfelt
unshared

because
we still don't really know how
to cross the boundaries
the barriers
erected by our own sin
by our fall into darkness.

darkness
surrounds
and clouds
and we rejoice
over a small crack
where we can peep through
and see
the other
maybe stick a pinkie through
and have a real point of contact
where we can touch
but
chiseling at these cracks
trying to take down a formidable wall
with our fingernails
we cannot do it
chinks, cracks, holes
are all we are capable of
at our best

because
at our best
we are still dust
and mere dust
can't tear down this wall
cross this barrier.

through our cracks
we see little glimpses
of parts
of the garden on the other side
but we can't see the whole
and can't reach it anyway.
which is good
because we'd ruin it if we did
with what we've become.

what can take down a wall like this?

A veil rent
a wall miles thick for us
tears like paper for You.

and we stumble
as the earth quakes
we fall
as it shudders
we hear and feel the cracking
the heaving
the wall coming down...

yet it is still there.

Still there.

but...
there is a place where it has fallen
a place
where there is a way through
a way that transforms us as we pass
we will not harm it

a place
in You
the great passage
in You

where I am hidden

in You.

Mark Series - Mark 2

No new Mark post this week! In the next few weeks we will be making yet another transition - moving to another house.  I will try to post something new next week - but it may take me 2-3 weeks to get back on track again. I hope to resume regular Mark posts by May.  In the meantime, I am still archiving the older Mark posts - grouping them to make them easier (I hope?) to find.   Today's post is an archive of all the posts for Mark Chapter 2.

Why This Craving...?

Train crossing the Ob River in Novosibirsk in fall.
What is it I really want?

When I close my eyes
and imagine a cool breeze
gently brushing my cheeks

or

brisk rivulets stealing my breath
as they soak my hair
run down my face
pour over me

or stronger still the urge

to thrust my head
into the nearest snowdrift
I almost taste the relief
as I picture it

But
is that really how it will be?

Is it possible
for any of these things
(the last especially)
to satisfy me?

What do I hope to receive?

Do I equate refreshing, renewal, relief-
with wet, with cold?

Does my brain need cooling off?

Do I think it will numb my mind?

Is it a reprieve from FEELING
that I crave,
that I think I need?

Even my cravings
are foreign to me
I do not understand them.

But

I guess I know
they will not give what I long for

Temporary at best
relief that will not last
and maybe
yes, probably
in one case at least
end with a headache.

the imagined relief
eluding me.

I know this.
But admit it?
I feel despair.

Oh, But You say
Streams of living water
will well up inside me  (John 7:38)

You say
justice will roll on like a river
righteousness like a mighty stream  (Amos 5:24)
and You say
Your word will fall like rain
like gentle showers (Deut. 32:2)(Is. 55:10)
You

You
will be like rain falling on a field
like showers watering the earth (Psalms 32:6)

You
You will wash me
white
as snow (Is.1:18)(Ps. 51:7)
snow that refreshes (Prov. 25:13)
and  I,
You say if I thirst
to come to You and drink  (John 7:37)

You are my water
and what if,
what if I come,
and drink
and then
Fling myself in
to Your depths
immersed
in Your waters
surrounded
by You

Maybe then
in You
my brain will feel
cool.

Close, But Still Outside - Mark 3:31-35 Post 2

Image of Lion at Novosibirsk Zoo (Close But Still Outside - Mark 3:31-35 post 2)
(Novosibirsk Zoo)
I see them here
Standing outside
and my heart goes out to them
They've come, perhaps, a long way
to find You -

and here they are
outside the crowd that surrounds You

are they...
Chagrined?
Discouraged?
Disappointed?

or

Encouraged
to have found You at last...?

I don't know...
but...

I hope
if I had gotten this far -
this close to You -
I would have gone in myself
pushed and struggled my way through...
instead of sending someone else...
