Take Charge or Love? - Mark 3:20-30 Post 4

If I heard that crowds of people were following my son to such an extent that he couldn't even eat, I'd be worried and concerned (Mark 3:20-21).  Even if I believed he was doing good things - great things - I'd still want to step in, intervene, make sure he was ok.  Feed him.  Since he's "obviously" not taking care of himself.
At least, not the way I'd like him to.

If my mature and otherwise sane and stable daughter came to me and said, "I'm going to _______ country, and it's going to be really hard and I'll be weary most of the time because the needs are so great.  Then I'm going to die there..."

What would I say?

What if she added, "...but it'll be worth it because many people will come to know Him"?

Wouldn't I say, "You're out of your mind!" - at least at first?

I would.
But I'd be wrong. (most likely)

Watching our children go into hard and even dangerous situations goes against our natural instincts.  A mother is supposed to nurture and protect.

But there comes a time when we can't.
There comes a time when we shouldn't.

Haven't I prayed for my children to be Yours?
Don't I want them to be Yours?

To be God's?  To serve God?

To walk with You?

And one day, my children are possibly going to do things that look crazy to me as they follow You.

Since they aren't You, I'm going to have to navigate discerning if they are just crazy, or if they are truly following You.  I'm going to have to learn to trust You with them - and to trust them with You - as they follow You, in whatever You've called them to.

I hope I will know You and them well enough to recognize You and Your call on them.  I hope I won't just think they're crazy (unless they really are).

So...
I pray for wisdom and courage
to give my children room to be what You have called them to be
to not hinder them with my fears as they walk the paths You have called them to walk

I pray for the faith to be excited for them - even if a little afraid.
(ok, a lot afraid!)

Teach me the difference
between coming to "take charge"
and coming to lend a hand, to support, to comfort, to help out by making a meal or in other ways, to contribute so they can eat - or rest in You...to encourage them to walk even more closely with You

Teach me the difference
between trying to take over - circumventing or even aborting their calling -
and loving them: enabling them to better fulfill their calling
so that they can walk freely in the paths where You lead them.
