Easy...or Hard? - Mark 2:13-17 Post 4

Chalkboard: Mark 2:13-17 Post 4
Follow You

(Mark 2:13-17).

How easy it would be to follow You
And leave my strivings behind.

To be free of these things
- All my own doing -
That have enslaved me,
Empty as they are,
To leave them
and follow You.

How easy it would be
if I could just get up and leave,
leave it all
follow...
But somehow,
oh, somehow
it's so hard.

So hard to let go...

But You stand here before me
Looking at me.

"Follow me," You say
And I know...

I will.

Walking Around the Block in Novosibirsk

Today I'm writing at Djibouti Jones as part of the "Let's go Flaneuring" series.  When Rachel Pieh Jones invited us to walk through our cities and describe what we see, I realized that I've lived in Novosibirsk for so long I no longer truly see it.  The first few years, I was able to answer when someone asked, "How is it different?"  But lately I pause and think, "IS it different?"

Of course it is, because every city has its own unique flavor and culture.   So does every city block.  So come, join me, and see what I see as I go for a walk around the block in Novosibirsk, Siberia.

(note: for those of you from Siberia who may be puzzled - I went for this walk and wrote the post at the beginning of November.  That's why there's a relatively small amount of snow in the pictures, compared to what there is in January.  And no, the billboard doesn't really say Broken Bread and Small Fish.)

No Mark post today because...I spent the last few days making my way to Thailand and preparing to lead worship at a conference. I hope to post more pictures from Thailand later, but for now, since today was supposed to be a Mark day, here are some links to some previous Mark posts that you may have missed or might enjoy re-reading.

Not That Kind of Fairy Tale - Song/Video

I love fairy tales.  I love the way they seem so magical, the way good wins, the way everything works out in the end.

Life - our life - is different.  I often wish that our life had more elements of a fairy tale in it.

and yet...
"Three times I pleaded," Paul said. (2 Cor. 12:8-10)

Even when I don't get to make three wishes, even when what I want is not granted, but denied over and over...

Even when I'm suffering instead of enjoying the happy ending...

And even when I find that I am not the good, kind, all-things-lovely-heroine that I thought I was, that I had so hoped to be...

There is grace for me. (2 Cor. 12:9)

Things do happen by "three's" in our story.
Just not...granted wishes.

Our "three's" are terrible, tragic, but stunningly beautiful.

(Jonah 1:17)
(Matt. 4:3-11)
(Mark 10:34)
(Mark 14:32-41)
(John 13:38)
(John 18:15-18, 25-27)
(John 21:15-19)
(Luke 24:7)
(2 Cor. 12:8-10)

Sometimes I think I would rather have the wishes granted.

And yet...there is a wild, lonely beauty in our story, in this grace You have given us...

in this our fairy tale - where the prince really does come to seek his bride - but he has to die to save her from the dragon.

January 7 Is Christmas In Russia

Russian Christmas stocking
It's January 7, and it's Christmas in Russia.  Santa Claus doesn't come at Christmas - well, actually, he doesn't come at all.  Grandfather Frost visits on New Year's Eve, but Christmas is all about Jesus. It's an official holiday in Russia. Different people do different things for Christmas.  Some go to the Orthodox church for an all night vigil.  Some have family dinners.  Some do nothing.

We celebrate by going to a church service in the afternoon where we sing carols and act out the nativity.  After we have Christmas dinner at church with our friends.

And as Joey and I celebrate Christmas in Russia with our friends, we're also celebrating something else.  January 7 is our anniversary, and we've been married 20 years today.
