When the Evening Comes - Mark 1:29-34 Post 1

Chalkboard: Mark 1:29-34 Post 1
She was unwell.  Her son-in-law (Simon Peter) and his brother (Andrew) brought guests, but she could not get out of bed.  She could not receive You and the others in whatever was the customary way.

When You healed her, she got up and served those who were with You there around her - at her house.  That included You (Mark 1:29-31).

I imagine that means she saw what they needed - food, drink, washing, refreshing, rest - and saw to it that they got it.

And what happened next?  That evening a crowd - the whole town - came to the door, and You healed various diseases and set many free (Mark 1:32-34).

She didn't do it.  You did.

I assume she was there, since she lived there, but I don't know that.  I'm not sure what role Simon and Andrew, James and John played - but they were probably there as well.  It was Simon and Andrew's house.  I imagine they were at Your side.

As far as I can tell, she played no part in what happened that evening.  And yet...

She had served You and the others earlier.

I'm sure You would have been healing and setting people free even if she hadn't.

But she had.  And I like to think that the evening was a little easier, a little less exhausting, for You and the others because of what she did.

Now You are at my house, and I am "unwell." I'm "incapacitated" - unable to see and engage in all that goes on around me, because I am not what I should be.  I never have been.  For ages I have not known what it is to be well, what it is to be what You created me to be.

But You came to my house.  And though I could not receive you as You deserved, You took my hand and helped me up.  I have been healed.  I have been set free.

Will I serve those who are here around me?

Will I allow myself to be aware of their needs?

Will I MAKE myself aware of their needs - and seek to meet those needs as I am able?

And maybe it will be a little easier, a little more pleasant, a little less exhausting for them when...

I know the evening will come.  I know that many will be healed and set free.  Not by me, but by One I served earlier in the day...

You...

...and those who were with You, who will be by Your side when the evening comes.
