What Will It Mean to Follow? - Mark 1:16-20 Post 3

Chalkboard: Mark 1:16-20 Post 3
You said, "Come, follow me."

I want to know what You are calling me to.  Where will I go?  What is my "calling"?  What will I do?

What did Peter, Andrew, James and John know when You called? (Mark 1:16-20) They understood they were to be Your disciples, Your students.  But beyond that?

They didn't know what You were calling them to.

All they knew that day was they were to leave what they were doing and follow You.  Some vague words about fishing for men.  But who knew what that meant?

What DID it mean for them?  What would they do?

They were students first and later teachers as well.  They passed out bread and picked up leftovers after meals.  They took boats around the lake.  It seems they once found clothes for someone.  They organized crowds and (grudgingly at first) rounded up kids.  Their tasks were many and varied, and could come upon them unexpectedly.

But they didn't know all that on the day they walked away from their nets.

Neither did they know that they would follow You around Galilee (mostly) for about 3 years.  That they would see You multiply bread and fish.  That they would see You heal and restore to life.  That they would see You command the wind and waves.

That You would appoint them as apostles and call them Your friends.

That they would scatter.  That You would die.

That You would live again.

They couldn't anticipate the moments of despair and pain that were coming, nor the incredible joy.  The cross.  Their own fates which they began walking to when they left the boats and nets.  The people - ALL the people they would touch, and how their names would be on all our tongues in our churches and books throughout history...that I would be reading and thinking about them today...

they didn't know they were changing the world...

they didn't know they were bringing You to the world...

All this they did not know -

and they never would have known, if they had not followed.

What will it mean to follow You?

There's only one way to find out.

Only as I follow You, do I discover the depth and breadth of all You have called me to.  Only looking back do I understand the path laid out for me.  Only in the end will I really know what Your call contained for me.

I know a lot more today about what You have called me to than I did when I first heard You.  Where will You lead me next?  Where will I be five years from now - what will I be doing?

I can make some rough guesses based on where I am now.

But I don't really know.

What I DO know is today, You call me to follow You.

Tomorrow - Your call will still be for me to follow You.

The call has always been to follow You.
